On June 23, 2000 the
iron-ore carrier, MV Treasure foundered a few miles off the coast
of Cape Town, South Africa, spilling 1,300 tons of fuel as it sank. The
spreading oil slick threatened to wipe out nearly half of the entire
world population of African penguins, already classified as a species
vulnerable to extinction. In response to the disaster, more than 12,500
volunteers descended upon Cape Town to help save the oiled and imperiled
birds. Over the course of three grueling months, these dedicated workers
cleaned, force-fed and rehabilitated 19,000 oil-covered penguins, and
rescued another 19,500 penguins from their breeding islands before the
oil could hit. 95% of the penguins were ultimately saved in what was the
largest and most successful rescue of oiled animals in history.
Having worked as a rehabilitation supervisor during
the rescue effort, penguin expert Dyan deNapoli tells this extraordinary
story in gripping detail. The Great Penguin Rescue is an
inspirational chronicle of how following one’s passion can lead to
unexpected, rewarding adventures – and it illustrates how people from
around the world can unite for a greater common purpose. Readers will be
inspired to believe they too can make
a difference.
